We Can't Get Over How Cool This Converted Mazda RX-8 Coupe Is

An Indonesian body shop known as Kupu-Kupu Malam has given the Mazda RX-8 a unique facelift, borrowing lighting units from a more recent Mazda6 to modernize the design.
This custom RX-8 project draws inspiration from the Mazda RX Vision concept, although the resemblance may require some imagination. The builders have meticulously replaced most of the body panels with their own handmade versions, attempting to stay true to Mazda's design language.
One of the standout features of this build is the LED headlights and taillights sourced from the third-generation Mazda6 sedan. To make these lighting units fit the design, the shop had to redesign the bumpers, fenders, hood, and tailgate. The front bumper appears quite aggressive, with enlarged intakes and a substantial splitter.
Similarly, the oversized side skirts, the dramatic rear diffuser, and the decision to swap the signature RX-8 suicide doors for Lamborghini-style suicide doors might raise eyebrows. The rear wing and side gills also contribute to the car's unique styling. Notably, the RX-8 retains its stock 18-inch alloy wheels from the 2008 facelifted version, making them appear somewhat small compared to the extensive bodywork modifications.
However, it's unclear if any powertrain upgrades were made to the modified RX-8. The original Mazda RX-8 was equipped with a 1.3-liter twin-rotor engine producing up to 232 hp in its most potent iteration, known for its unique rotary engine characteristics. Some RX-8 owners have explored engine swaps due to the rotary engine's fuel consumption and potential maintenance issues.
