First Glimpse of HWA's Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II Restomod

HWA has recently treated us to the very first images of their upcoming masterpiece, the HWA EVO, based on the iconic 190E 2.5-16 Evo. This revelation has left enthusiasts eagerly awaiting its arrival, expected by the end of 2025.

For those well-versed in German motoring history, Hans Werner Aufrecht, one of the founders of AMG, needs no introduction. HWA, his brainchild, is embarking on a journey to revive the 190E 2.5-16 Evo, and the early glimpses are nothing short of spectacular.

A Limited Production and Remarkable Heritage

Only 100 lucky individuals will have the privilege of owning an HWA EVO. To put this into perspective, only 502 units of the original Evo II were ever produced. The 190E 2.6-16 Evo II marked the culmination of the homologation special 190E series, serving as the precursor to the modern-day AMG C-Classes, including the Mercedes-AMG C 63. The 190E's legacy continues even in the plug-in hybrid C 63, which shares its four-cylinder engine concept with its predecessor.

Pricing for the HWA EVO is set at 714,000 euros (plus VAT), roughly equivalent to $786,000 at the time of writing. While precise technical specifications are yet to be finalized, HWA has committed to incorporating "state-of-the-art technology in terms of powertrain, performance, chassis, brakes, aerodynamics, and safety."

A Design That Captures the Essence

Khyzyl Saleem, the visionary behind the new restomod's design, has left an indelible mark. The HWA EVO promises to be a work of art that pays homage to its legendary predecessor. When comparing the original 190E 2.5-16 Evo II to its modern tribute, the family resemblance is striking. The iconic flared arches, prominent front splitter, and massive rear wing have been preserved and accentuated. Notably, the rear boasts an even wider, mega-widebody treatment, housing modern interpretations of the classic six-spoke alloy wheels.

A Front-End Transformation

The front-end transformation is particularly noteworthy. It features a sleek, blacked-out grille, the removal of the tri-pointed star on the hood, a redesigned front bumper, and LED headlight clusters with a blackout treatment. These design choices ensure that the HWA EVO stands out as a contemporary masterpiece while paying homage to its historic roots.

Anticipation Builds

While we eagerly await further details on this remarkable restomod, one thing is certain: HWA has a legacy of excellence. Founded by an original AMG founder, the company has a storied history of preparing racing Mercedes vehicles. Factory-backed Mercedes race cars, such as the AMG GT3 and AMG GT4, have benefited from HWA's expertise. HWA also played a pivotal role in the Mercedes CLK GTR and even builds race-spec engines, including the V12 used in the Pagani Huayra R.
