Skoda’s First-Gen Kodiaq Armored: A Subtle Fortress On Wheels

Skoda has revealed an armored version of its first-generation Kodiaq SUV, developed in partnership with UTAC Special Vehicles, a specialist in vehicle security. This armored Kodiaq comes with several key modifications to enhance safety and protection.

Interestingly, Skoda chose to base the armored model on the facelifted first-generation Kodiaq, rather than the newer second-generation model that debuted last year. The changes on the outside are quite subtle, with strobe lights integrated into the grille, bumper, and tailgate.

The goal was to keep the vehicle’s appearance as close to a regular production model as possible, ensuring it doesn’t stand out. The interior repurposed the 8-inch infotainment screen into a "communications hub," equipped with GPS and controls for emergency lighting and sirens. However, the true enhancements are in the protective features, which include the addition of bullet-resistant glass and extensive steel armor to fortify the passenger cabin.

To handle the extra weight, Skoda upgraded the SUV’s suspension and brakes, making sure the armored Kodiaq retains the performance and handling characteristics of the standard model. Skoda also fitted each wheel with a tire retention system, enabling the vehicle to continue driving even with flat tires. Skoda has not made any changes to the engine, offering customers a variety of powertrain options, including a 4x4 version.

Skoda claims the Kodiaq Armored can withstand gunfire from various handguns and assault rifles, as well as blasts from grenades and high explosives. It meets the rigorous PAS 300 and PAS 301 civilian armored vehicle standards. The Kodiaq underwent thorough testing, including trials for payload capacity, acceleration, top speed, and handling.

Its armor was put to the test with over 200 rounds of ammunition, and the vehicle demonstrated its blast resistance on the sides, roof, and underfloor. Given that Skoda has already sold nearly 500 armored Superbs since 2018, it’s clear there’s demand for bulletproof vehicles from the brand.
