Now This Is A Rare Merkur XR4Ti Restomod

In the late '80s, Ford introduced the Merkur brand in an attempt to bring upscale European models to the United States, including the XR4Ti, derived from the European Sierra. JH Restorations has now unveiled an impressive restomod version of the XR4Ti, reimagining what a contemporary interpretation might look like.

The project began with the intention of swapping out the original turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine for a modern Ford EcoBoost four-cylinder crate engine.

However, the new powerplant necessitated a substantial hood bulge, prompting further exterior modifications. JH Restorations meticulously scanned the entire vehicle and crafted a bespoke body kit, which includes a protruding front chin spoiler, widened fenders adding an extra 4.0 inches to the car's width, and a commanding rear wing reminiscent of the European Sierra RS Cosworth.

The car's striking appearance is completed with Ford's Area 51 blue paint. Under the hood, the tuned EcoBoost four-cylinder now delivers an impressive 475 to 500 horsepower, a substantial upgrade from the original 175 hp. To enhance handling and performance, the suspension was sourced from the 1990s SN95 Mustang, taking advantage of the extensive aftermarket support available compared to the Merkur.

Inside, blue Recaro fabric from the 1980s adorns the center sections of the seats and door panels. The Blaupunkt stereo maintains a period-correct appearance while offering modern features like Bluetooth and a USB port. A custom gauge cluster from Dakota Digital has taken the place of the original instrument cluster, and the dashboard has received a light blue leather wrap to match the interior decor.
