Icon, renowned for its exquisite vehicle restorations and modernized classics, has ventured into Chevrolet territory with the "1970 Reformer". This project, a departure from Icon's typical offerings, represents their first foray into working on a Chevrolet Suburban.

The 1970 Reformer embodies the signature blend of vintage aesthetics and modern performance that Icon is known for. Jonathan Ward, the founder and CEO of Icon, sought inspiration for this project in the architectural philosophy of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who famously championed the "less is more" approach.

However, the most interesting part is under the hood. Nestled within this Suburban is a Nelson Racing Engines twin-turbo Alien LS 427 engine, a true powerhouse that cranks out an astonishing 1,000 horsepower and 900 lb-ft of torque. Icon's commitment to reliability ensures that this impressive engine can confidently idle in traffic while keeping the air conditioning running smoothly.

A 4L85-E automatic transmission with overdrive is responsible for harnessing the power. It confidently rides on a unique Art Morrison four-wheel independent chassis. To enhance its performance, the builder added a Dana 60 nodular rear end and high-capacity Brembo brakes. Not to mention that the stunning dark gray finish, along with its gray HRE wheels and ZR-rated tires, make it an eye-catcher.

The customizations extend to a meticulously designed, one-piece machined 6061 billet grille. What sets this project apart is the level of detail and personalization that Icon and the client have achieved. From the door handles to an extra rear door, this Suburban represents a collaborative and creative approach to modernizing a classic.

The addition of a fourth door not only enhances the aesthetics but also adds functionality to this already unique vehicle. Jonathan Ward pointed out, "This build was an incredible experience because the client kept wanting us to push further and further from the traditional, which I really enjoy." Unsurprisingly, such an extraordinary level of craftsmanship comes at a price. The total cost of the customization reaches an impressive $1.1 million!

1970 Reformer

For those eager to see this automotive masterpiece in person, it will make its public debut at the Icons of Design showcase on November 19, hosted at the Hagerty Garage + Social Van Nuys location. Don't miss the opportunity to witness the 1970 Reformer, a symbol of the harmonious blend of vintage charm and modern power.
