Hyundai’s Boulder Concept Shows It’s Finally Serious About Trucks

Hyundai already has a strong hold in the US, but now it is aiming at a different crowd. The Boulder concept, shown in New York, previews a rugged SUV and hints at the brand’s first body-on-frame utility.
It looks the part straight away. Massive 37-inch tires fill the arches, and the whole stance feels overbuilt in a good way. The design follows Hyundai’s Art of Steel idea, with sharp lines and solid surfaces. It is bold, but it does not feel forced.

There are some practical touches too. The tailgate is designed to be more flexible, there are storage solutions on the roof, and safari style roof windows help with visibility on rough trails.
Underneath, it is more serious than it looks. The Boulder uses a ladder frame linked to Hyundai’s upcoming pickup, which is expected around 2030.

Inside, the approach is simple. Physical buttons and knobs are still there, and instead of one large screen, it uses four smaller displays. Materials are chosen to handle real use, not just look good.
The bigger picture matters more. Hyundai is preparing a truck built specifically for the US. It will be designed, engineered, and produced locally, using American-sourced steel. That is a clear move to compete directly with domestic brands on their own ground.

Hyundai is not treating this as a side project. The company plans to enter the midsize pickup segment with a serious effort.
This concept is only a preview, but it shows where things are heading. Trucks and SUVs will play a bigger role, and Hyundai wants a proper seat at that table.
