Genesis GV80 Hybrid Debuts With 347 HP And 25% Better Fuel Economy

Genesis is giving the GV80 a new way to move, and the hybrid setup brings more power with a clear focus on smooth, quiet driving. The new GV80 Hybrid debuts in South Korea and reaches the market next month as the brand’s first hybrid powertrain.

For starters, the system combines a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a starter motor and an electric drive motor.

Genesis uses a water-cooled battery, which helps manage heat and allows the system to deliver higher discharge power. Total output reaches 347 hp and 390 lb-ft, with a new seven-speed transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The Genesis GV80 Hybrid reaches 62 mph in 7.1 seconds.

The hybrid also brings a useful efficiency boost. Genesis expects fuel economy to improve by more than 25% compared with the regular 2.5-liter turbo, which makes 300 hp and 311 lb-ft. The SUV starts in EV mode and can stay electric up to around 19 mph. The system also favors electric power in traffic and during repeated stops.

Genesis also adds other smart touches, including electric reverse, adaptive regenerative braking, and extra measures to reduce engine vibration and noise. The exterior gets a revised grille and new wheels, while the cabin offers four new two-tone themes in Obsidian Black, Taiga Green, Ultramarine Blue, and Travertine Beige, plus two new genuine wood trims.
