This Vintage Mercedes G-Class Looks Original But Packs Twice the Power

Classic G-Class projects often fall into one of two camps: faithful restorations or radical restomods. This 250GD sits somewhere in between.

Rather than taking the V8 route, EMC decided the factory 2.5-liter OM605a turbodiesel five-cylinder deserved another chance.

The engine has been extensively reworked with dual overhead camshafts, a larger turbocharger, and several supporting upgrades, increasing output to around 225 horsepower. That's a big step up from the original 150 hp and roughly twice as much as naturally aspirated versions of the same engine.

The exterior remains unmistakably G-Class, although the details give away that this isn't a standard restoration. Magma Beam Orange paint is paired with a steel front bumper, a bull bar, black fender flares, a roll cage, and black 17-inch Stahl wheels. Inside, the cabin features Doppio and Nasturtium leather along with stained oak trim across the dashboard and steering wheel.

Some restored classics spend more time in garages than on the road. With its stronger engine and refreshed mechanicals, this 250GD looks ready to be used the way a G-Wagen was always meant to be.
