South African company SVI Engineering has taken the regular GTI and turned it into a real-life armored car, aptly named the AK47 Golf 8 GTI. That's right, this little beast can handle bullets up to 7.62 x 39 mm, basically the kind fired from an AK-47.

Why would you need a bulletproof hatchback, you ask? Well, in South Africa, where these bad boys are built, police and security teams actually prefer these zippy GTIs and Golf Rs over clunky SUVs for their sharp handling and speed. SVI's upgrade lets them have their cake and eat it too – protection and performance in one package!

Here's the breakdown:

• Super Strong Shell: SVI uses special 3.5 mm armored steel plating across the car's body. They could have used lighter materials, but steel is way more reliable when things get tough.

• Bulletproof Windows (Almost All of Them): All the windows get upgraded to ballistic glass that can stop four AK-47 rounds in a small area. The only window you can still open is the driver's side, and even that only goes halfway down – gotta make some sacrifices for safety!

• Protected Powertrain: The fenders are also armored to keep the engine and other important parts safe. This way, even if you get shot at, you might still be able to drive away (assuming you don't, you know, pass out from the whole near-death experience thing).
• Extra Weight, Extra Work: All this armor adds a whopping 750 lbs to the car's weight. To handle this extra chunk, SVI upgrades the suspension, but they haven't revealed exactly how.

The not-so-fun part? This armor package costs around $35,000, on top of the price of the car itself (which starts around $32,000 in the US). Plus, it takes a whole three months to transform your GTI into a bulletproof beast.
