This Might Be the Ferrari 550 Convertible Ferrari Should Have Built

Touring Superleggera’s V12 Veloce was already the kind of car that made enthusiasts stop scrolling. Long, elegant, and powered by a naturally aspirated V12, it captured everything people love about the Ferrari 550 Maranello while refining nearly every detail.
Now it’s losing part of its roof.

The Italian coachbuilder has released a teaser for the V12 Veloce Aperta, a new open-top version set to debut on June 26. From the single image released so far, the car appears to adopt a targa-style layout, with a wraparound rear window and a fixed roll hoop behind the seats. It looks beautifully integrated, and arguably more elegant than any factory open-roof version Ferrari built from the 550 platform.

That matters because Ferrari never offered a true targa version of the 550. The 550 Barchetta went fully open and sacrificed most weather protection, while the later 575 Superamerica used a rotating glass roof that was technically impressive but visually awkward. Touring’s interpretation seems to strike a far better balance between style and usability.

Better still, the fundamentals remain untouched. The Aperta is expected to keep the same naturally aspirated V12 and open-gate six-speed manual as the coupe, likely with 503 hp on tap. The existing V12 Veloce also features carbon-fiber body panels, Brembo brakes, and adaptive TracTive suspension, combining classic Ferrari character with a more polished driving experience.

Only 30 V12 Veloce coupes were planned, each priced at €690,000 before the cost of a donor 550 Maranello. The Aperta will almost certainly command an even higher price. Then again, for some enthusiasts, a hand-built V12 Ferrari with a manual gearbox and open sky overhead is about as close to perfection as it gets.
