China’s New BAIC BJ81 Looks Like Wrangler and G-Class Had a Baby

BAIC is getting ready to unveil a new off-roader called the BAIC BJ81, and even from the first previews, its influences are pretty easy to spot. The boxy shape and rugged details echo familiar names like the Jeep Wrangler and the Mercedes-AMG G-Class. The BJ81 is expected to make its first public appearance at the Beijing Auto Show this April
Starting with the front, the BAIC BJ81 has a bold five-slat grille and a pair of round headlights with thin daytime running lights. The bumper looks properly rugged too, with a design that suggests the truck is meant to spend at least some time away from pavement.

Move to the side, and the flared wheel arches, chunky stance, and silver wheels give off strong Mercedes-Benz G-Class vibes. BAIC also added side steps and mud flaps, small touches that reinforce the off-road look.
Around the back, the SUV gets a split tailgate and a large spare wheel mounted outside. The taillights feel a bit reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender, and there is a tow hitch tucked underneath for good measure.

Under the skin, Chinese outlet Autohome reports that the BAIC BJ81 could use a small 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine as part of a range-extended hybrid setup. In that layout, the gasoline engine works mainly as a generator while electric motors drive the wheels.
BAIC has not confirmed the full technical details yet, so we will have to wait until the Beijing Auto Show to learn exactly what this off-roader is capable of. For now, it looks like another serious entry in the growing wave of rugged SUVs coming out of China.
