One Of 14 Porsche 968 Turbo S Models Could Set Auction Record

For years, Porsche’s front-engine coupes (the 924, 944, and 968) sat in the shadow of the 911. They were capable, balanced sports cars, but collectors largely overlooked them, which kept prices relatively modest.
That dynamic has shifted. As interest in analog-era performance cars from the ’80s and ’90s continues to grow, so has appreciation for Porsche’s transaxle lineup. Now, one of the rarest examples ever built - a 1993 968 Turbo S - is heading to Gooding & Co.’s Amelia Island sale with an estimate of $900,000 to $1.2 million.

The Turbo S was developed as a homologation model for the 968 Turbo RS race car. Porsche added a turbocharger to the standard 3.0-liter four-cylinder, increasing output to 305 horsepower. It paired that engine with a close-ratio six-speed manual, limited-slip differential, upgraded suspension, and brakes sourced from the contemporary 911 Turbo 3.6.

Visually, it was just as serious. A larger front splitter, adjustable rear wing, hood-mounted NACA ducts, and lightweight Speedline wheels set it apart from the standard 968. Demand was weak when new, and Porsche halted production after just 14 units - far short of the 100 originally planned. That limited build run has since turned the Turbo S into one of the most sought-after front-engined Porsches.

The car offered here is finished in Paint-to-Sample Zermatt Silver with a black leather and corduroy interior. It was originally delivered to Czech tennis champion Helena Suková and remained with her in Monaco until 2014. It later moved to Germany before arriving in the United States around 2021. This Porsche 968 Turbo S changed hands again in 2024 and shows 18,872 miles from new.

Interesting fact: One example sold for $792,000 in 2021. Should this car meet its estimate, it would establish a new high-water mark for a front-engined Porsche.
