VW’s New Atlas Is Bigger… and Going After Full-Size SUVs
by AutoExpert | 29 March, 2026
The Atlas has been around since 2017, so a replacement was due. VW has been teasing the new one for a while, and now we get a clearer look at what’s coming.
The new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas sticks to the same idea, but it looks bigger. The side view shows long proportions, with a stretched roofline and noticeable overhangs. The current model already sits past 200 inches, so any increase puts it close to full-size SUV territory.

VW is clearly focusing on space. The brand points to a roomier cabin and features aimed at everyday family use, which is exactly what this segment expects.
Details are still limited, but the engine will likely stay a turbocharged four-cylinder. The EA888 Evo5 unit from the new Tiguan is the main candidate, producing 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque there. That is slightly below rivals like the Kia Telluride, so VW may push the output higher for the Atlas.

Inside, owners can expect a more modern setup. Ambient lighting, a larger infotainment system, and a layout similar to the Teramont Pro sold in China.
The new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas arrives at a time when the segment is stronger than ever. Models like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride already offer hybrid options, which is something VW will need to address.
The full reveal is set for March 31, 2026, with a debut at the New York Auto Show shortly after.
