Mercedes-AMG Just Unleashed a 1,153-HP Electric Monster

Mercedes-AMG has taken one of its boldest steps yet. The new GT 4-Door Coupe ditches combustion power entirely and goes all-in on electricity, even as some performance brands are starting to back away from their most ambitious EV plans.
Built on the dedicated AMG.EA platform, the sleek four-door is aimed squarely at the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and Audi e-tron GT. Styling will no doubt divide opinion, but the numbers leave little room for debate.

In flagship GT 63 4Matic+ form, the new electric AMG uses three axial-flux motors to produce up to 1,153 hp and a staggering 1,475 lb-ft (2,000 Nm) of torque when launch control is activated. A slightly less outrageous GT 55 version will also be offered with up to 805 hp.

Performance is exactly what you’d expect from those figures. The GT 63 can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.1 seconds with rollout, or 2.4 seconds in real-world terms, and reach a top speed of 186 mph with the optional Driver’s Package. Power comes from a 106 kWh battery and an 800-volt architecture that supports charging speeds of up to 600 kW. Mercedes says the battery can go from 10 to 80 percent in just 11 minutes, while adding up to 285 miles of range in 10 minutes.

AMG has worked hard to preserve some of what the theater buyers expect. The car features simulated gearshifts, synthetic V8-inspired sound, and multiple drive modes, including an AMGFORCE Sport+ setting designed to mimic the feel of a traditional high-performance drivetrain. Active Ride Control suspension, rear-wheel steering, and carbon-ceramic front brakes are all standard.

Inside, the cabin adopts Mercedes’ latest digital-heavy layout with a 14-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch instrument cluster, and an optional 14-inch display for the front passenger. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but Mercedes says it will be positioned alongside the outgoing GT 4-Door. Whether enthusiasts embrace a fully electric AMG of this magnitude remains to be seen, but on paper at least, it looks anything but timid.
