Lexus IS May Transform Into A 500 HP Electric Sports Sedan

The Lexus IS is not fading away just yet. For 2026, Lexus actually gave it a meaningful refresh instead of letting it quietly age out. The updates are mostly visual, with a cleaner spindle grille and a sharper front end. It is subtle, but it keeps the car looking fresh in a segment that moves fast.
That said, this version may only have a short runway. A fully redesigned IS is reportedly on the way, and the twist is a big one. The next generation could ditch combustion engines entirely and go all-electric.

According to the Japanese magazine Best Car, the upcoming IS is being developed as a battery electric sedan designed to push Lexus into a more advanced, tech-focused space. As always with early reports, nothing is official until Lexus says it, but the direction fits the brand’s broader strategy.

The design is expected to take inspiration from the Lexus LF-ZC, much like the next Lexus ES. Think sleeker lines, a lower roof, and a more futuristic stance. Reported dimensions of 188.6 inches in length, 74 inches in width, and 54.9 inches in height would keep it firmly in sports sedan territory, just with a sharper edge.

On the performance side, the base model is said to use a single motor with rear-wheel drive. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive flagship could deliver around 500 horsepower. The headline-grabbing claim is a 620-mile range target on one charge. If Lexus can even get close to that in real-world conditions, it would immediately make the IS one of the most competitive electric sedans out there.

The report also mentions next-generation Lexus tech, including gigacast manufacturing, over-the-air updates through Arene OS, and the DIRECT4 All Wheel Drive control system. A launch could happen as soon as next year.
Turning the IS into a full EV would be a serious shift. This has always been the driver-focused Lexus, the compact rear-drive sedan that stayed closer to classic sports sedan values than the more comfort-oriented ES. Losing the combustion engine will definitely change how some longtime fans see it.

Still, Lexus is clearly all in on electrification. The ES already shows the brand can juggle multiple powertrains, so an electric IS is not hard to imagine. Personally, the key will be feel. If Lexus can make the electric IS engaging, balanced, and fun, most people will not miss the engine noise as much as they think. If it ends up feeling heavy or numb, that is where the real risk lies.
