China’s New Cadillac XT5 Looks Nothing Like the One America Still Gets
by AutoExpert | 13 May, 2026
The Cadillac XT5, still on sale in the United States, feels like a reminder of another era. In China, the story is very different.
Cadillac unveiled a completely redesigned XT5 there nearly two years ago, and now the lineup is expanding with a plug-in hybrid version. Recently uncovered through filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the new model looks more modern, more advanced, and far more in tune with where the brand is heading.

The styling changes are subtle, but they help the XT5 blend in with Cadillac’s electric models. The grille appears to gain illuminated elements, the lower intake uses active shutters to improve efficiency, and the rear bumper drops the faux exhaust openings for a cleaner look. It’s a small update, but it gives the crossover a noticeably fresher appearance.

Some versions will also feature Cadillac’s latest driver assistance technology. A roof-mounted lidar sensor and additional cameras on the front fenders signal the presence of the Xiao Yao Zhi Xing system, developed with Momenta. The setup is designed to handle urban driving situations like roundabouts, lane changes, and pedestrian crossings with a more natural and confident approach.

Powertrain details are still limited, but the filings list a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 148 hp, paired with two electric motors rated at 215 hp at the front and 148 hp at the rear. Whether Cadillac ultimately describes it as a plug-in hybrid or something closer to a range-extended setup, the result should be a much more efficient and capable XT5 than the one American buyers know today.
