Chevy and Hyundai Are Building a Pickup Together… and It’s Hybrid
by AutoExpert | 23 March, 2026
Chevrolet is getting close to launching a new midsize pickup for South America, and this one’s more than just a refresh. It’s being developed together with Hyundai. Underneath, it’s still based on the Chevrolet Colorado, but heavily reworked. The platform will be updated to handle hybrid powertrains from the start, not added later.
That means you’ll likely see a mix of engines. Petrol, diesel, and hybrid setups are all in the lineup. GM’s TurboMax engine is expected to be part of it too, probably with a bit more power.

It’s still very much a proper pickup, though. Body-on-frame stays, along with a stronger rear axle for better load capacity. Work-focused versions like single-cab models aren’t going anywhere either, especially for markets like Brazil.
Even though Hyundai and Chevrolet share the base, the trucks won’t look the same. Each brand will do its own design, inside and out. So you’ll get two different takes on the same foundation.

This is part of a bigger partnership between the two. Chevrolet and Hyundai are planning several shared models, including a van for North America that could be based on the Hyundai Staria.
The new pickup is expected around 2028. It’ll replace the S10 in Brazil and also give Hyundai a proper entry into the midsize segment, where it’ll compete with trucks like the Toyota Tacoma.

Simple idea in the end. Keep it tough, make it more efficient, and build it for real-world use.
