BMW’s New China-Only iX3 Is Bigger, Smarter, and More Local Than Expected

BMW is rolling out its Neue Klasse platform in China with a version tailored specifically for the market, and the iX3 LWB shows that approach right away. At first glance, it looks similar to the standard model, but the differences come through on a closer look.
The longer wheelbase stretches the rear doors and creates more space for passengers in the back. The door handles also change to a semi-enclosed design, mainly to meet local regulations, which shows BMW is already adjusting hardware depending on the market.

There are a few other small details. A camera is integrated into the rear spoiler, and the tailgate features Chinese lettering. Both reinforce that this version is built with a specific audience in mind.
The key change is the wheelbase. It increases by 108 mm, reaching 3,005 mm. That makes it longer between the axles than the X3 LWB and brings it close to the X5 in terms of interior space. Overall length should sit just under 4.9 meters, placing it neatly between the two.

The interior has not been revealed yet, but the bigger story is the software. It runs BMW Operating System X, combined with Huawei HarmonyOS Next, AI systems from Alibaba and DeepSeek, and Amap navigation with 3D mapping.
Driver assistance is also tailored. BMW is working with Momenta on a system designed for local driving conditions, including dense urban traffic and longer highway use.

The powertrain stays the same as the standard model. It uses a dual motor setup with 463 hp and 645 Nm (476 lb-ft) of torque, paired with a 108.7 kWh battery. Claimed range exceeds 900 km (559 miles) on the CLTC cycle, and fast charging supports up to 400 kW.
This version will be built in China through BMW Brilliance and sold only there. Pricing has not been announced yet.

More than anything, this shows how BMW is adapting its global models to fit specific markets, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
