BMW Opens Early Reservations As Interest In The New i3 Grows

BMW's upcoming i3 has managed something many new EVs struggle to achieve: a largely positive reception. Sure, some people aren't sold on the styling, but compared to many recent electric car launches, the criticism has been relatively mild. In fact, demand appears strong enough that BMW has decided to open reservations in Europe earlier than originally planned.
Early buyers will be offered a special First Edition model loaded with extra equipment. Features such as tri-zone climate control, sun-protection glazing, a heated steering wheel, a 3D head-up display, Harman Kardon audio system, and a power-operated trunk all come standard. Perhaps the most useful upgrade is the onboard charger, which increases AC charging speed from 11 kW to 22 kW.

Beyond those extras, the First Edition is mechanically identical to the regular i3 50 xDrive. It uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup powered by a 108.7-kWh battery pack. BMW says the electric sedan can travel up to 563 miles on a charge under the WLTP cycle, though real-world figures will likely be lower.

Performance looks impressive, too. The powertrain produces 469 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque, helping the i3 sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 4.7 seconds. Not bad for a sedan that's clearly focused on comfort and long-distance driving.

European deliveries are scheduled to begin in fall 2026, with production starting this August. Buyers in the United States will have to be a little more patient, as the i3 isn't expected to arrive there until 2027. Judging by the early response, though, BMW may not have much trouble filling the order books.
