Mercedes Just Made the GLS Even More Loaded Than Before

Mercedes has reworked the GLS for 2027, and the focus is clear. More tech, more comfort, and a bit more presence. This is their take on a full-size luxury SUV that tries to cover everything in one package.
The exterior changes are subtle, but they add up. The grille now has a chrome frame with integrated lighting, and both the headlights and taillights pick up small Mercedes star details. The headlights also move to a new Digital Light system with micro LEDs, which improves visibility and efficiency. For US models, there is now a high beam function that adjusts itself so it does not blind other drivers.

There are new paint options, including Dark Petrol and Manufaktur Patagonia Red Metallic, along with fresh 21 and 22-inch wheels. Every GLS comes with a large panoramic roof, measuring over 10.8 square feet. It brings in a lot of light and makes the cabin feel more open. You can also add an illuminated hood star, which leans more toward presence than function.

Inside, the layout changes more noticeably. The lower cabin stays familiar, but the dashboard is new. The air vents are slimmer, making room for the MBUX Superscreen. This setup combines three 12.3-inch displays under one glass panel, including a screen for the passenger. Behind it all sits a new system powered by MB.OS, with AI integration and support for over-the-air updates.

There is a lot built into it. You get a virtual assistant with different avatars, augmented navigation that overlays directions on the road view, and a wide range of connected features. Rear passengers are not left out either. An optional setup adds two 11.6-inch displays, giving them their own space for media.
Other updates are more subtle but still useful. The front seats now include a vibration function, there is a new air filtration system, and you get new interior trims like Beech Brown and wood finishes. The steering wheel has also been updated with roller controls.

Seating stays flexible, with space for six or seven. Even the third row has power adjustment, which is still not common in every SUV.
Engine options include a 3.0-liter inline six in the GLS 450 with 375 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque and a 4.0-liter V8 in the GLS 580 with 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The sprint to 60 mph takes 5.4 seconds in the 450 and 4.6 seconds in the 580. Both use an integrated starter generator to smooth things out and improve efficiency.

All versions come with 4Matic all-wheel drive. There is also a new transfer case with a low-range gear, although most owners will never use it.
The suspension setup keeps comfort as the priority. Airmatic air suspension is standard, while the GLS 580 offers E-Active Body Control. That system uses multiple processors and sensors to keep the car level and even helps free it if it gets stuck by adjusting the ride height.

Mercedes also worked on noise control. New materials reduce high-frequency engine sounds, which helps keep the cabin quieter.
Driver assistance gets more capable as well. The system relies on 10 cameras, 5 radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. A feature called City Pro is planned, which will handle point-to-point driving in heavy traffic once it is released.

The new 2027 Mercedes GLS is expected to reach US dealers in the second half of 2026. Pricing has yet to be announced, but with the current model starting at $90,250, this one will likely be higher.
