Volvo Autonomous Long-Haul Semi Prototype: A Fresh Start

Truck drivers are in short supply, which has exacerbated the fuel issue in the United Kingdom and slowed delivery to retail outlets. Today, Aurora and Volvo showcased an autonomous long-haul semi prototype based on the VNL. While the issue isn't new, Volvo autonomous long-haul semi prototype could provide a solution. 

The Aurora sensor suite appears to comprise at least four separate lidar sensors. Aurora has earlier noted that their technology uses high-resolution cameras and radar sensors. This should give continuous coverage of the truck's surroundings, increasing safety.

Concerning the latter, the businesses argue safety is crucial and that core system like brakes and steering will be redundant. “We are not equipping each vehicle with hundreds of these autonomous platform needs, key redundancies, and controls on our own,” Aurora added. Instead, it is collaborating with Volvo to develop the VNL design from the beginning to facilitate autonomous driving.

Aurora will spend the next few months incorporating their hardware kit as well as assessing and certifying Volvo autonomous long-haul semi prototypes. The firms stated we may expect more information in the future, but they're already trying to find first centers for on-road highway testing. However, Aurora earlier stated that self-driving trucks might arrive as early as 2023.
