Toyota is following the trend of converting older vehicles into zero-emissions machines, with two designs debuting at the Tokyo Auto Salon in Japan. Both display vehicles share the Toyota AE86's platform but are powered by separate engines.

Based on the Trueno body type, the AE86 H2 concept has a two-tone white and black exterior with detachable headlights. Toyota has also included two hydrogen storage tanks from the Mirai that are located in the trunk. The four-cylinder engine is preserved as close to its original configuration as is practical, but updated fuel injectors, fuel pipelines, and spark plugs are used to satisfy the requirements of the hydrogen system.

According to the Japanese carmaker, the vehicle was created in a manner that leaves the sound and vibrations of the internal combustion engine very audible. The AE86 BEV concept, built on the same chassis but with a Levin body and fixed headlamps, will also have its world premiere at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

It shares almost identical bodywork with the AE86 H2 concept, and beneath its skin lies a fascinating drivetrain. The battery-operated system incorporates parts from several Toyota and Lexus production vehicles, including an electric motor from a Toyota Tundra hybrid, a battery pack from a Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid, and other parts.

The interior seating of both Toyota AE86 designs further highlights their eco-friendliness. recycled materials were used to recreate these seats' original form, including recycled materials for the seatbelts. Toyota collaborated with many aftermarket manufacturers to bring these two concepts to life, but at this time, they have no plans to go into production on a large scale.
