This Opel Frontera Gravel Concept Is More Lifestyle Than Rock Climber

SUVs today aren’t just about utility—they’re style statements. With the Frontera Gravel, Opel leans into that, turning a family-friendly electric crossover into something that looks ready for the wild, even if it’s more about attitude than altitude.
Built as a one-off, the Gravel concept is based on the all-electric Frontera, and while it’s still front-wheel drive only, it’s dressed like it just rolled out of a mountain rally stage. There’s a roof rack (from Thule, no less), a front winch, extra LED lights, all-terrain tires, snow tracks strapped to the back, and a full desert-style wrap with orange accents that say, “I know where the trailhead is, trust me.”

The project came together with input from Opel’s enthusiast community and help from motorsport specialists BlackFish and XS. The Opel Frontera Gravel rolls on chunky BFGoodrich tires and 16-inch Borbet wheels, while the D-pillars carry snow tracks. Inside, you’ll find microfiber seats with orange stitching, a black headliner, and the kind of rugged-but-clean look that suits a digital nomad or weekend wanderer.

Under the floor it’s the same electric setup you’ll find in the standard Frontera Electric. That means a single motor with 154 hp and a 54 kWh battery offering up to 400 km of range. Opel describes it as suitable for soft-roading, which is a polite way of saying you can take the scenic route without voiding your warranty.
Still, the lack of all-wheel drive is the biggest sticking point here. Opel hasn’t confirmed plans for an AWD Frontera, but it’s not totally out of reach. Stellantis has already used electrified rear axles in models like the Jeep Avenger 4Xe and Alfa Romeo Junior Q4, so a similar setup for the Frontera isn’t off the table—just not on it yet.

The Opel Frontera Gravel will make its first public appearance on May 30 at the XS Carnight event in Wörthersee, Austria. Officially, it’s just a concept. But unofficially? If the crowd response is strong, you can bet Opel’s taking notes.
As Opel’s marketing VP Rebecca Reinermann put it, the Gravel version is about “freedom, adventure, excitement, and pushing boundaries.” Whether or not those boundaries include actual off-road obstacles is still up for debate.
