You may have gotten used to Volkswagen presenting a series of concept cars coming from its apprentices at the Lake Wörthersee Festival, in Austria. The GTI-based concept cars always manage to draw attention, and despite the Covid-19 related circumstances, VW still managed to present its Golf GTE Skylight concept. The concept is the result of 16 apprentices’ work, with three of them coming from last year’s project,

The presentation took place at the carmaker’s factory and everybody noticed the similarities of this year’s concept with last year’s GTE HyRace. Just like HyRace, Golf GTE Skylight runs on a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

As for the exterior design, many details are setting Golf GTE Skylight apart from the production Golf GTE. First of all, there’s the Lapiz Blue livery and Catalina Blue graphics embellishing the car’s white body. A set of 20-inch rims complete the sporty looks.

The door handles come with special lights, while the taillights are illuminated by LED graphics on dark background. The Golf-R borrowed rear spoiler and side sills finish up the looks, with the final highlight being represented by the 3D-printed stainless steel exhaust pipes.

Now, for the interior, hold your breath, because there is a GTE badge hologram floating over the central touchscreen. The blue upholstery continues the exterior’s blue theme.

As for the power, it comes packed with 3.110 Watts which is more than ok. The covered range reaches 60 km, on electric autonomy. And if you want to party, there is an electric skateboard in the luggage department.

Golf GTE Skylight has a 1.4 TSI stock engine with an electric motor alongside. The combined power reaches 242 hp, as a 295 lb-ft torque. The engine sends the power to the front wheels through a 6-speed DSG gearbox, helped by the XDS electronic differential.
