Mazda is set to make waves at the end of this month during the Tokyo Auto Show, teasing the world with a preview of their new MX-5 concept. The automaker's tagline for the event, "The future created by the love of cars," underlines their enduring commitment to crafting vehicles that delight and captivate.

A Glimpse into the Future

While the automaker has been tight-lipped, a sneak peek indicates that the concept will be an evolved version of the two-seat coupé previously teased in a financial presentation last year. This upcoming marvel will serve as the centerpiece for the Japanese automaker's event.

Signature Design Cues

The preview revealed the rear taillights, featuring four roundels and an illuminated 'Mazda' logo, aligning well with the overall coupé design. The rear diffuser further complements this, with its fin-like extrusions seamlessly integrating with the arch and bumper.

Unfolding the Next Chapter

Unveiled alongside the MX-5 generation gallery in November 2022, this coupé aims to provide a glimpse into Mazda's future in sports cars. The automaker plans to showcase this unnamed concept alongside other MX-5-themed experiences and vehicles, amplifying the brand's long-standing affinity for the iconic roadster.

The Road to Electrification

Last year's chassis reveal hinted at ample storage for a longitudinally-mounted engine and a battery pack. Given Mazda's significant focus on electric vehicles, it's highly likely that this new addition will also tread down the electric avenue.

A Lasting Legacy

Joachim Kunz, the Head of Product Development and Engineering at Mazda Europe, affirmed the brand’s dedication to the MX-5. The current generation, introduced in 2015 and updated for the 2024 model year, is expected to continue for a while. According to Kunz, the MX-5 isn't just a car for Mazda; it's a symbol, and its existence is perpetual. Although its current form enjoys traditional combustion energy, the time for its electrification is inevitable.

In Closing

Mazda’s upcoming MX-5 concept embodies the brand’s philosophy of creating the future through a love for cars. As the auto world waits for the full unveil, one thing is clear: Mazda continues to cherish the MX-5, nurturing it for the road ahead—whether that road is paved with asphalt or powered by batteries.
