The E30 M3 You’ve Never Seen: Student Designer Unveils A Modern Twist On A BMW Classic

The E30 M3, a legend that refuses to fade, gets a fresh twist in a bold redesign by Ihn Lee, a student at Korea National University of Arts. Lee’s digital reimagining doesn’t just pay homage to the 1980s icon—it breathes new life into it, merging the E30’s unmistakable charm with BMW’s futuristic Neue Klasse design language.

It’s a blend that manages to look both familiar and thrillingly new. Up front, the new design gracefully marries retro with cutting-edge. The four classic round headlights are back, but now they feature sleek LED daytime running lights.

The modest kidney grilles, snug within a blacked-out panel, stay true to the E30 roots. Yet, the bumper brings bolder energy with a wide, hungry grille and larger air intakes that give the car a fiercer, more modern presence. From the side, this vision is pure elegance. The two-door profile, with squared-off arches and sharp quarter panels, maintains the E30’s silhouette while adding a contemporary flair.

Thin pillars keep the cabin light and airy, while intricately designed wheels offer a subtle touch of sophistication. At the back, slim LED taillights lend a sculpted look, giving it a refined, almost timeless vibe. The designer also imagined the E30 M3 as a Touring version, a Convertible, and a Polizei variant.

If you ask us, the Convertible is adding an extra dash of elegance and fun to the mix. While BMW’s head of design, Adrian van Hooydonk, has hinted that Neue Klasse styling will soon define both electric and traditional models, a revamped E30 M3 isn’t in the works.
