Sharp Ventures Into EVs With The LDK+, A Homey Electric Minivan

Sharp, the well-known Japanese electronics company, has ventured into the automotive world with its new electric vehicle concept, the Sharp LDK+. This futuristic minivan, developed alongside tech giant Foxconn, feels more like a mobile living room than your typical vehicle. The idea is to make road trips feel homey, and the rear area of the LDK+ can be rearranged to suit various needs.

One of its standout features is a massive 65-inch display behind the tailgate, perfect for turning the back of the car into a movie theater or a virtual meeting space. Furthermore, a sliding table transforms the rear space into a play area for kids or a convenient workspace for remote work.

Sharp calls the LDK+ an "extended living room" full of their latest tech innovations. On the outside, though, it’s not exactly a head-turner. It’s got a pretty basic boxy look, with a cab-over design similar to a commercial van, finished in silver. Honestly, it kind of looks like a high-tech home appliance on wheels, especially with the big Sharp logo front and center. But the magic happens when you step inside.

The rear seats can swivel 180 degrees, turning the cabin into a cozy little room. For privacy, the side windows come with liquid crystal shutters, and there’s an AI-powered system that takes care of the lighting and temperature based on what the passengers prefer. Foxconn, who owns a majority stake in Sharp, created the "EV open platform" upon which it all operates. Japan's Folofly Corporation also brought this concept to life.

Sharp didn’t dive deep into the vehicle’s specs, but they did mention that the battery can act as a backup power source for your home during emergencies. Plus, if you want to tap into renewable energy, the roof has solar panels that can charge the vehicle—when the sun is shining, of course. The LDK+ will make its debut at the Sharp Tech-Day 24 exhibition in Tokyo, happening on September 17-18. While Sharp hasn’t said whether this concept will hit production, they’ve emphasized their commitment to promoting “comfortable lifestyles” and helping to achieve “carbon neutrality.”
