Renault 4L Electric Concept Honors Model's 60th Birthday

Renault commissioned the French designer Mathieu Lehanneur to reinvent the Renault 4L, which has sold more than 8 million units in 30 years, for the 60th anniversary; and what he's accomplished is a hotel-inspired, all-electric design.

The Suite N°4 design is based on the Renault 4L, however, instead of rear body panels, it has polycarbonate windows to provide sufficient light to occupants. Moreover, translucent solar panels cover the roof to assist in recharging the entirely electric drivetrain that substitutes the traditional motor.

The classic grille has been replaced with a polished aluminum sheet to provide the automobile with a flowing aspect. The paintwork, meanwhile, is intended to appear more substantial. It's expected to look like cement since it's covered in three layers, a homage to modern building trends.

Yellow velvet covers the front seats and dash, while a dense, ribbed chenille material covers the rear seats to give them a more sturdy feel. All of the materials, according to Renault, were supplied by high-end Parisian producers.
Inquiring minds will be able to look at the concept this weekend at Maison & Objet in Paris. Once it joins Atelier Renault's collection in November, Renault 4L all-electric will be available for purchase.
