Future Volvo XC90 SUV Envisioned In New Recharge Concept

Volvo goes electric all the way and the latest news from the carmaker is its new Recharge concept, described as a “manifest for the upcoming generation of fully electric vehicles”.

The Recharge concept looks much more radical than XC60 and XC90, going for “less is more”. Any non-useful elements have been completely excluded, the design now focusing on high-precision color execution.

The changes begin from the front, where the Volvo badge is illuminated and the entire grille has been replaced with a shield-like structure. New Thor’s Hammer thin headlights are completing the design with various animations.

The chassis has also been simplified, now featuring chunky side skirts, suicide rear doors with flush-mounted door handles, slim pillars, and a panoramic glass roof with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor.

Continuing to the back of the car, there are vertical taillights, with wings extending at higher speeds for improved aerodynamics. There is a minimalist bumper, a small spoiler, and a concave liftgate.

“Less is more” is also available for the car’s interior. A minimalist dashboard with a 15-inches infotainment system is completed by a freestanding digital instrument cluster installed on the steering column.

Robin Page, design head, has stated that the interior is integrating Volvo’s latest technology focused on user experience. It comes packed with natural and sustainable materials, while the entire interior design is a piece of art.

The four individual seats are separated by floating central consoles, while the entire cabin features ecological materials and a storage compartment reminiscing a bag.

No performance figures have been made public but the Recharge concept is based on a new platform created for electric cars only. This means a completely flat floor, unlike the former electric Volvo models.

Recharge is expected to be envisioning the future XC90, which will come around sometime in 2022.
