Contrary to common belief that electric versions of cars with internal combustion engines are often compromised, Mercedes-Benz is rewriting the rulebook. The automaker showcased its transformative CLA-Class Concept at IAA 2023 in Munich, previewing its new electric-first compact car platform.

Based on Mercedes-Benz's modular design, the CLA Concept dazzles with its sleek styling, eco-friendly interior materials, and an impressive estimated range of 466 miles. Although the automaker has been tight-lipped about battery and powertrain details, it draws inspiration from the Vision EQXX concept for its electric motors and innovative dash-spanning Superscreen infotainment setup.

The CLA Concept retains the signature four-door coupe silhouette that it has been known for since 2014. However, the designers have subtly updated the exterior, adding a longer hood and shorter rear deck to give the car a sportier look, complemented by a vivid Pomegranate Red finish.

One notable distinction between the CLA Concept and its predecessors is the audacious grille design, which adds to its imposing presence. Furthermore, the vehicle features full-width LED illumination in both the front and rear headlights, along with sleek body sides and a gracefully curved rear end. The body-color grille, with its galaxy of illuminated stars, gives the concept a jewelry-like appeal up close.

Inside, the Vision EQXX's influence is evident, from sustainable materials to the advanced Superscreen display. Seats are covered in silver and white Nappa leather, tanned using coffee husks. Meanwhile, the purple accent shading is crafted from recycled PET plastic.

Two types of batteries will be available:

  1. An entry-level lithium-ion phosphate chemistry battery.
  2. A flagship silicon-oxide battery.

The vehicle’s 800-volt electrical system enables rapid DC fast charging, reaching an estimated 248 miles in just 15 minutes. Once on the road, the CLA battery powers a compact Mercedes-Benz Electric Drive Unit (MB.EDU) equipped with a two-speed transmission, associated inverters, an electric motor, and other components. Each unit weighs 243 pounds, produces 253 HP, and utilizes fewer rare earth metals for enhanced sustainability.

Mercedes-Benz's new MMA platform will spawn at least three other variants besides the CLA—two crossovers and a station wagon. Although these vehicles will offer internal combustion options, electric versions are expected to follow soon. More details on the MMA lineup will be unveiled in due course.

As for pricing, it remains under wraps for now.
