A preview of the forthcoming completely electric G-Class, Mercedes-Benz EQG Concept was revealed at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich. Mercedes wanted to keep the Wagen's rough character while moving it into the electrified era.

EQG Concept is based on the 2nd-gen G-Class (W463) and has EQ design elements including a lighted completely covered grille and two-tone paint. An LED roof bar, lighted side guards, 22-inch alloy wheels, aerodynamic bumpers, and a wall box-inspired storage compartment replace the spare wheel.

While being all-electric, the Mercedes-Benz EQG concept uses the G-Class ladder frame with independent front suspension and a stiff back axle. Because the battery is incorporated into the frame, it preserves the ICE's off-road capabilities.

Mercedes didn't reveal anything about the electrical motor because it's still under testing. With four independently controlled electric motors delivering immense pulling force and maneuverability, EQG may be quicker than the Mercedes-AMG G63 performance leader.

Mercedes claims that the EQG will have a climbing capacity of up to 100% on the proper ground, due to the electric motors' rapid torque and the shiftable 2-speed transmission.

We don't yet know when the manufacturing version of the EQG will be released. However, towards the end of its production, Mercedes will put it through a rigorous test drive on Graz's 1,445-meter-high Schöckl mountain to demonstrate its toughness.
