Electric Future Meets Classic GTI: VW ID. GTI Concept Boasts Simulated Shifts and Iconic Design

Volkswagen has recently revealed its ID. GTI Concept, an electrified vision of its legendary hot hatch lineage. The unveiling took place at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich, marking the first time that an electric vehicle has been adorned with the iconic GTI badge. A production version is already in the pipeline, promising an electrifying experience for driving enthusiasts.

This highly-anticipated concept car springs from the ID.2all design, which was revealed earlier this year. Although specifics regarding horsepower are still under wraps, it's confirmed that a solitary electric motor will power the front wheels via a Limited Slip Differential (LSD). The new GTI promises to exceed the original ID.2’s output of 228 hp and sub-7-second sprint to 62 mph.

Dial In Your Driving Experience

One of the most exciting features is the GTI Experience Control located on the center console. This system allows drivers to tailor their electric hatchback experience by mimicking the steering, sound, and engine characteristics of GTI classics like the 1976 Mk1 or the 1986 16-valve model. The system even simulates upshifts, adding a touch of nostalgia to the high-tech driving experience.

Inspired By the Past

The concept was imagined by VW’s chief designer, Andreas Mindt, who aimed to carry the GTI legacy forward when he drafted the original ID.2all. The car's striking appearance boasts elements reminiscent of vintage GTI models, like a front lower grille patterned in hexagons, side skirts that twist in homage to door pressings, and a beefier diffuser in the rear bumper.

A Nod to GTI Legacy

Various GTI insignias embellish the car, but it's the more subtle design choices that catch the eye. Black accents and the red stripe on the grille call back to the early GTI designs, and the 20-inch wheels seem to have been inspired by GTI models from over four decades ago. The interior doesn't disappoint either, combining modern flair with throwback touches like plaid 'Jack-e' upholstery and a pulsing LED on the driver’s seat to indicate the car’s lock status.

The Future Meets Tradition

Inside the cabin, the blend of past and current GTI influences is evident. A modern take on the golfball shifter, for instance, is a nod to GTI history even though the shift control now resides on the column stalk, in line with other recent VW electric models.

VW ID. GTI Concept is not merely an electric vehicle but a tribute to the storied GTI lineage. It brings the best of both worlds, combining the thrill of a classic hot hatch with the forward-thinking sustainability of electric mobility.
