Daihatsu Vision Copen Concept: Challenging the Mazda MX-5 with Its Lightweight Charm

Daihatsu took the wraps off its Vision Copen concept at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, showcasing a car that breaks away from its kei car legacy. Instead, the Vision Copen aspires to be a compact sports convertible, a move that pits it against the iconic Mazda MX-5.

The prototype will likely remind viewers of the first-generation Copen, which made its debut in 2002. It features rounded lighting units and shows significant design parallels in its body. Its dimensions almost mirror those of the Mazda MX-5 ND, albeit slightly smaller. Measuring 3,835 mm (151 inches) in length, 1,695 mm (66.7 inches) in width, and 1,265 mm (49.8 inches) in height, it is longer than the current second-generation Copen by a notable 440 mm (17.3 inches).

Inside the cabin, Daihatsu has opted for a minimalist approach with a driver-focused layout. Features include a subdued digital cockpit, touch-sensitive controls on the center console, and sporty seats. Both the exterior and the interior carry a look more akin to a production-ready model rather than an outlandish concept. This has led to speculations that Daihatsu is seriously contemplating entering the compact sports car segment.

The Vision Copen is equipped with a 1.3-liter engine that can run on carbon-neutral fuel. Although Daihatsu has not released specific details about the engine, it is roughly twice the size of the 658 cc engine in the existing Copen kei car. This points to a likely significant bump in power output.

In summary, Daihatsu’s Vision Copen concept has expanded its scope to challenge the likes of the Mazda MX-5 with its larger dimensions and more powerful engine. Stay tuned for more details as we cover the Japan Mobility Show towards the end of October.
