Chevrolet Is Retiring Camaro In Favor Of An Electric Muscle Car

Despite poor sales, the 6th-generation Chevrolet Camaro is still on the market. It has a long way to go to catch up to its 2 muscle car rivals: Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger, and things are likely to continue that manner for the near future. We previously claimed that the current Camaro would be available until at least 2024.

GM previously hinted at the possibility of an all-electric Camaro at a show. However, there was no mention of body type. Considering a fuller review of GM's future EVs, Automotive News has grounds to believe that instead of a 7th-generation Camaro coupe and convertible, the long-running muscle car could be replaced with an EV sedan. Dodge has already promised an all-electric muscle vehicle for 2024, so this isn't without precedence. Is it going to be a coupe or a sedan? We have no idea; all we know is that Dodge intends to reinvent the muscle car. Chevrolet appears to be doing the same thing but in its unique way.

The report also mentions that Chevrolet's current and only 2 electric vehicles, the Bolt and Bolt EUV, will be phased out after 2023 and 2024, respectively. From 2025, the Cadillac Lyriq, Optiq, and Symboliq will be the successors to the Cadillac XT4, XT5, and XT6. In the meantime, the Chevrolet Spark, Trax, and Buick Encore are all being phased out.

Chevrolet Malibu is also an electric muscle car sedan, which takes us back to the potential of an EV muscle car sedan. There would be a gap in the lineup if the Malibu were not available, but it would not be for a midsize family car. However, it would have to be something like a lot more character, technology, and superior efficiency.

Chevrolet's posture against Dodge and Ford would be strengthened by such a vehicle. The Mach-E has already electrified the Mustang, and the coupe and convertible are likely to follow next. In the Camaro vs. Mustang battle, Chevrolet realizes it's lost quite so much ground to Ford. Taking a fresh strategy could prove to be effective.
