Buick Celebrates Two Million GL8s With Futuristic OMPV Concept

Buick is hitting a big milestone in China with the production of its two millionth GL8 minivan. And to celebrate in style, they’ve just introduced something wild—a new concept they’re calling the OMPV, or “Organic Mobile Private Villa.” Yep, you read that right. The idea here is to showcase the next step for luxury minivans, blending futuristic design with versatile features.

The concept itself looks pretty sharp. It has a nearly vertical front with some funky triangular accents and a light setup that's definitely not your average minivan. The hood is short, flowing right into a huge windshield, which adds to the sleek, silver body.

The Buick OMPV concept features a contrasting black roof, atop which sits a sensor pod, indicating the presence of advanced technology under development. The flush door handles, fancy aerodynamic wheels, and cool rear fins (yes, fins!) also make a statement. Those fins even hide the taillights, which stretch across the back.

Buick kept the interior under wraps but gave us a few hints. They say it’s all about being flexible. The inside can switch between a chill living room, a kid’s play space, a mobile meeting room, or a private retreat for executives. The Internet of Things connects it, ensuring the integration of high-tech features throughout.

Powertrain details? Well, Buick’s not giving much away there, either. All they confirmed is that it’s a “new energy vehicle.” This likely means it’s either a plug-in hybrid or, more likely, a fully electric vehicle. Considering the sealed-up front fascia, opting for an electric setup appears wise.

During the same event, Buick handed over the two millionth GL8 to Olympic gold medalist Sun Yang. The one he got was a blue plug-in hybrid, and it turns out Buick has already racked up more than 30,000 orders for this van since unveiling it in April. Not bad for a vehicle that’s been around since 1999, marking a huge milestone in China’s premium MPV market.
