Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible Spied With 657 HP And A Huge Rear Wing

Most convertibles are built for sunny drives and a bit of showing off. Bentley’s next Supersports looks more like it wants to pick a fight with a racetrack. Spotted testing in matte black, the roofless version of the Continental Supersports could arrive at the Los Angeles Auto Show this November.

While losing the roof means gaining some extra weight, it should also mean more V8 noise reaching the driver’s ears. Sounds like a fair trade.

The prototype looks properly mean, with a deep front splitter, huge air intakes, extra fins on the front bumper and a big rear spoiler. Black wheels and a rear diffuser add to the look, while the wider stance sets it apart from a regular Continental GTC. The coupe can be fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires or stickier Trofeo RS rubber for track use. We wouldn’t be surprised if some owners actually take theirs to a circuit. Well, maybe once they get over the price.

The coupe is already a very different beast from a regular Continental. Bentley ditched the hybrid system and front-wheel-drive hardware, making it the first rear-wheel-drive Continental in 23 years. It also lost its rear seats and gained a carbon-fiber roof, helping shed around 1,000 pounds. The convertible won’t be as light, but it should still feel more focused.

Under the hood sits a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 making 657 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. That’s less than the 771 hp in the hybrid Continental GT Speed. However, the Supersports is built to feel sharper and more engaging, with a titanium exhaust developed with Akrapovic doing its part to make every drive sound special.

Bentley sold all 500 Supersports coupes despite asking $490,150 for each one. The convertible could get the same limited run and cost more than $500,000. That’s serious money for a car that’s heavier and less powerful than some other Continentals. But if you want a Bentley that trades a little comfort for a lot more attitude, this might be the one. Just don’t expect it to come cheap or quietly.
