Cadillac’s New XT5 PHEV Costs $36K, But America Won’t Get It

Cadillac has a new plug-in hybrid SUV, and it costs around $35,900 in China. There’s just one catch: American buyers can’t get it. The 2027 XT5 has already received a major update in China, while the US still waits for a replacement for its aging first-generation model.
Now, Cadillac has added a cheaper version called the XT5 Air PHEV to attract more buyers.

The Air sits below the existing Pro and Pro Max trims. It keeps the same exterior design and plug-in hybrid powertrain but cuts back on some equipment. The biggest change is in the driver-assistance tech. Instead of the more advanced Momenta R7 system with LiDAR, the Air uses a simpler camera-and-radar setup. It also gets smaller 20-inch wheels and a black-and-silver interior.
The good news is that Cadillac hasn’t skimped on the main screen: the Air still features the huge 33-inch curved 9K display found in the more expensive versions.

Under the hood, the XT5 Air uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with an electric motor. Combined output reaches 362 horsepower and 515 Nm of torque, with an electric all-wheel-drive system. Cadillac quotes a total range of up to 845 miles, including up to 133 miles on electric power alone. DC fast charging can take the battery from 30% to 80% in around 12 to 15 minutes.

At $36,000, the XT5 Air PHEV is cheaper than you might expect for a luxury SUV. But it’s only available in China, and a US launch looks unlikely due to restrictions on Chinese-built cars. Cadillac does plan to introduce an all-new XT5 for American buyers in late 2027, but details are still limited. For now, China gets the newer SUV with more engine options and plug-in hybrid power. US buyers? They’re stuck waiting. Talk about getting left on read by Cadillac.
