Meet The Mid-Engine 911 Porsche Never Built

Porsche has spent decades refining the rear-engined 911 formula, but one Italian startup believes there's still room to rethink it. Angelelli Automobili has unveiled plans for Project 754, an ambitious machine that uses the iconic sports car as a starting point while introducing major mechanical and structural changes.
Two versions are in the works. The 754 R sticks with the familiar rear-engine layout found in the 991- and 992-generation 911, while the 754 M takes a far more unconventional route by moving the engine behind the seats. That would make it the first modern mid-engined 911-inspired car, something Porsche itself has never put into regular production.

Performance targets are equally ambitious. Angelelli is currently developing 4.075-liter and 4.11-liter flat-six engines with custom intake, exhaust, cooling, and ECU upgrades. Thanks to forced induction, output is expected to land somewhere between 700 and 800 horsepower, depending on the final setup.

Even more impressive than the power figures is the company's obsession with cutting weight. The Project 754 is targeting a curb weight of only 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs), achieved through extensive use of carbon fiber, titanium, and 3D-printed alloy components. AI-assisted generative design also plays a role, helping optimize parts like the lightweight steering wheel for maximum strength with minimal mass.

Although heavily reworked, the Project 754 won't abandon its Porsche roots. The renderings reveal a body with larger air intakes, flared wheel arches, new side vents, and an aggressive rear diffuser and wing, while still retaining recognizable 911 styling. Production will be limited to just 50 cars.
