Would You Like Your Domino Pizza To Be Delivered By An Autonomous Nuro R2 Vehicle?

Nowadays, autonomous driving technology becomes more and more popular amongst companies that offer delivery services.  Domino is a food company chain that delivers pizza and due to the pandemic, their deliveries faced difficulties. That's why Domino wants to deliver their pizzas with Nuro’s R2 autonomous delivery vehicle. The service will begin starting this week, limited to one store in Woodland Heights, Houston, Texas.

This delivery program is a pilot program as being limited to a single store. Domino’s chief innovation officer Dennis Maloney admits that “There is still so much for our brand to learn about the autonomous delivery space. This program will allow us to better understand how customers respond to the deliveries, how they interact with the robot, and how it affects store operations.”

The company's chain is free to select from its online customers and to give them a surprise option to receive their order autonomously. The confirmation will be sent via a text alert allowing the customers to see where the R2 is along with a unique PIN to permit them to retrieve their order. On arrival, they simply type in their PIN, and the autonomous vehicle will on its doors deliver their pizza.

Domino’s claims that this autonomous vehicle R2 is the “first completely autonomous, occupant less on-road delivery vehicle with a regulatory approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation” and they are actually thrilled to be the first company to give their customers an all-new delivery experience.

Back in 2018, Kroger and Nuro firstly announced stepping into the future tickling with the idea of an autonomous grocery delivery pilot program, which included tests in three different regions - Scottsdale, Arizona, and Houston, Texas. The future will show how this is received by its customers since both the enthusiasm and idea are already a go.
