Volvo EM90 Electric Minivan: An Early Surprise That Shatters Expectations

The anticipation for Volvo's EM90 minivan was high, but a leak from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology spilled the beans ahead of its global unveiling set for November 12.

Bearing a strong resemblance to the Zeekr 009 version presented last year, Volvo's premier minivan has borrowed design elements and proportions. The front and rear are almost indistinguishable, except for the choice between 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels based on the variant.

However, the EM90 isn't just a carbon copy. It uniquely incorporates design hallmarks from the broader Volvo range, such as the concealed grille, the bumper intakes, and the iconic Thor’s hammer LED headlights – a nod to Marvel enthusiasts.

At the rear, it mirrors the Zeekr 009 save for the new T-shaped taillights boasting a chromatic finish and flanked by Volvo's emblematic lettering.

While we're yet to get a glimpse of the interior, predictions lean towards a Zeekr-inspired design featuring a three-row, six-seat configuration, an array of innovative tech amenities, and plush upholstery.

Dimension-wise, the Volvo minivan spans 205 inches in length, 80 inches in width, 73.3 inches in height, with a spacious 126.2-inch wheelbase. It's subtly more compact than the Zeekr 009, being 0.1 inches shorter and 0.3 inches less tall.

Under the hood, while the Zeekr 009 thrives on dual electric motors churning out 536 HP, the EM90 comes equipped with a singular rear-positioned electric motor delivering 268 HP and a capped top speed of 112 mph. It’s built on the Geely SEA platform and carries a Geely CATL battery employing NMC tech. Given these specs and its RWD configuration, it might surpass the 436-mile range touted for its AWD counterpart, the Zeekr. Could we see a beefier battery, possibly exceeding 140 kWh, in Volvo's future offerings?
