Volkswagen Waves Goodbye To Manual GTIs And Golf Rs In 2025 Refresh

Volkswagen’s 2025 Golf lineup has been given a fresh look and some appealing interior updates, but it comes with a bittersweet twist: the Golf GTI and Golf R are saying goodbye to manual transmissions. For fans of the stick shift, this marks the end of an era.

What’s surprising is that manual transmissions have been a big part of the GTI and Golf R’s recent success in the U.S. In 2024, GTI sales shot up by 48.6%, and Golf R sales climbed 29.6%. Of those, 41% of GTIs and 52% of Golf Rs were sold with a six-speed manual, a jump from 2023 when manuals made up 38% of GTI and 45% of Golf R sales.

But while U.S. drivers still love a stick, the global story is different. Interest in manual transmissions is fading in many markets, and stricter Euro 7 emissions rules make it costly to keep offering them. Faced with these challenges, Volkswagen decided to simplify things by focusing only on automatics for the Golf lineup.

However, manual enthusiasts still have hope. The Jetta GLI still comes with a six-speed manual in the U.S. In fact, manual GLI sales jumped 38% in 2024, following a 33% rise in 2023. While the GLI doesn’t quite deliver the hot hatch vibes of the GTI, it’s now the only manual Volkswagen you can buy in the U.S., which could make it even more popular in 2025.

So, while it’s hard to say goodbye to manual Golfs, the Jetta GLI is still flying the flag for old-school driving fun—a small but meaningful victory for stick-shift enthusiasts.
