Volkswagen Invests In A 100 GWh Wind Farm

With a stated goal of investing €40 million (USD 45 million at current conversion rates) in renewable energy projects by 2025, Volkswagen has pledged to help fund a wind farm in northern Sweden. The wind farm is the automaker's most significant endeavor to date. It will be built in Skellefte and will be managed by wpd Onshore Aldermyrberget AB, a wind farm expert.

With VW's aid, a section of the farm will produce roughly 100 GWh of electricity, enough to power 27,000 homes. As part of its "Way to Zero" program, the manufacturer has pledged to promote renewable energy projects. The decarbonization strategy appears to be aimed at making electric vehicles increasingly greener.

In comparison to the EU's existing electricity mix, charging automobiles with purely renewable energy reduces lifetime CO2 emissions by half, according to the company. However, the company is presently attempting to concentrate on locations where its cars are popular. Volkswagen is Sweden's EV market leader, with a 20% market share, which helps to explain why the company has opted to invest in the development of a wind farm there.

Even though this is its greatest project to date, it is also assisting with the construction of a solar plant in Tramm-Göthen, Germany. VW estimates that by 2025, it will be involved in roughly 20 more green power projects in Spain, the United Kingdom, Finland, and other countries. Volkswagen estimates that its initiatives will produce a total of 7 terawatt-hours of extra green energy. According to the report, this amount could cover the yearly consumption of almost 600,000 households.
