Volkswagen has confirmed the future ID. California campervan, which is built on the ID. Buzz. The plan was approved by the supervisory board and is scheduled to hit the market in the second part of this decade. According to the carmaker, the California series is in strong demand in many countries, with orders steadily growing over the last several months.
As a result, the board of directors approved a capital investment for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to begin the construction of California's first completely electric vehicle.
The ID. California campervan will join the Caddy California mini camper, the 6.1 California based on the Transporter, and the California XXL based on the Crafter. The ID. Buzz campervan will be built on the MEB chassis, with the extended wheelbase body style being used as a basis for optimum internal capacity.
Given that it would be used for long trips, it will most likely be equipped with a bigger 111 kWh battery pack, which will provide sufficient range as well as electricity for camping-related items.
The ID. California campervan is planned to have the famous pop-up roof, which will allow passengers to stand within the cabin while also providing space for an additional sleeping area. It might also have a kitchenette and smart storage areas, thanks to the electric architecture's flat floor.
