V8 No More? AC Cobra Adds Lightweight 2.0-Liter Turbo For 2026

The legendary AC Cobra has always been synonymous with thunderous V8 power, but starting in 2026, it’s taking a surprising turn. Purists will undoubtedly debate the debut of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Despite the downsizing, the new Cobra won’t be short on performance. Two versions will be available, with the top-spec model cranking out an impressive 395 horsepower. To achieve that kind of output from such a small engine, forced induction—either a turbocharger or supercharger—is a given. Buyers will also get the option of a dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual for a more hands-on driving experience.

AC Cars hinted in a recent interview with PistonHeads that they developed the new powertrain "in conjunction with a global leader in hybrid and internal combustion powertrain solutions." This has fueled speculation that it could be Volkswagen’s EA888 turbocharged four-cylinder—the same engine powering hot hatches like the Golf GTI and Golf R.

While the Cobra’s current 5.0-liter Ford Coyote V8 isn’t going anywhere, the four-cylinder version is expected to offer a lighter and more agile alternative. AC Cars also plans to add more carbon fiber components to these models, further cutting weight to sharpen performance.

There's no doubt that a new chapter in the Cobra's legacy is about to begin. Whether that’s a good thing or sacrilege depends on who you ask.
