Updated Information On The 2022 Kia Niro Hybrid

Seoul Motor Show in November saw the formal unveiling of Kia's second-generation Niro, but no details were given about its hybrid-electric (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and pure-electric drivetrains. The carmaker had a new press release with further information on the Kia Niro hybrid vehicle, including safety features and external dimensions.

As the new E-GMP is designated for EV-only cars, Kia Niro is built on the third-generation platform, which is most likely a highly modified version of its previous model's chassis.

The new Kia Niro HEV's self-charging hybrid powertrain includes a revised Smartstream 1.6-litre GDI four-cylinder engine with 103 hp (77 kW / 105 PS) and 144 Nm (106.2 lb-ft) of torque, as well as a permanent magnet synchronous electric engine with an additional 43 hp (32 kW / 44 PS). The overall output is similar to the previous model at 139 hp (104 kW / 141 PS). The power is sent to the front axle using a six-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.

With a wheelbase of 2,720 mm (107 inches), the new Niro is 4,420 mm (174 inches) long, 1,825 mm (71.85 inches) wide, and 1,545 mm (60.82 inches) tall. This equates to an increase in length of 65 mm (2.5 inches), width of 20 mm (0.78 inches), height of 10 mm (0.39 inches), and wheelbase of 20 mm (0.78 inches) over the previous model.

The new 2022 Kia Niro has a zero-emission mode called "Green Zone Drive" that may be enabled in certain locations such as residential neighborhoods, schools, or hospitals. Kia doesn't state the EV range. The battery can only be charged by regenerative braking or the internal combustion engine in a self-charging hybrid. Under Korean fuel efficiency rules, the HEV powerplant may achieve 4.81 lt/100 km (48.9 mpg), according to Kia.

Next, we'll talk about technology. The drag coefficient stays constant at 0.29 cd, despite the vehicle's increased size. With a 451 lt (15.9 cubic feet) boot that has been expanded by 15 lt (0.5 cubic feet), the cabin is likewise roomier. A 10.25-inch screen combining the instrument cluster and infotainment, as well as a 10-inch head-up display, are included in the EV6-inspired cockpit.

There's a part for the temperature control system, a wireless charging pad, C-Type USB connections, ambient lighting, and an automated gearbox with a cylindrical shift lever. Advanced speech recognition, a motorized tailgate, a digital key, and built-in front and back cameras are among the other technological features.

Remote Smart Parking Assist, Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control, Safe Exit Assist, Highway Driving Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Junction Turning, and Junction Crossing are all included in the Kia DriveWise package of ADAS. 

The Kia Niro HEV will be available in Korea starting this month, with worldwide markets following in 2022. More information on the PHEV and BEV models will be released closer to their market introduction.
