Understanding Breathalyzers: What You Need to Know When Stopped

Imаgine you’re out, you’ve had a couple of drinks, аnd you find yourself stаring at a breathalyzer the police just hаnded you. Whаt’s going on here? Let’s walk through it like we’re just chatting on the couch.

What is this thing? A breathalyzer is what the police use to test how much alcohol you’ve got running through your veins. It’s the go-to device to see if you’re driving drunk, which could land you a DUI (that’s when you're officially too drunk to drive).

Breathalyzers

How does it work? You blow into it, it checks your breath for alcohol, and it pops out a number that tells them how drunk you are—or aren’t. There are a couple of types:

  • The basic kind you might find in a gadget store.
  • The police kind, which is super precise and can really tell how much you’ve had to drink.
  • The big machine at the police station that’s even more accurate.
  • When do they use it? Say you’re driving a bit wonky or you get stopped at a checkpoint. The police might ask you to blow into this thing as a quick check. If you say no, things might get a bit more complicated.

Breathalyzers

What does it tell them? It gives them a number that shows your blood alcohol content (BAC). Over 0.08%? That’s usually when they say you’re too drunk to drive. But here's the deal—these machines aren’t perfect. They can mess up, or not be calibrated right, and tricks like sucking on a penny won’t fool them. Just drink responsibly, or better yet, not at all if you're driving.

What if you're over the limit? If that number is too high, you might get charged with a DUI. That’s a headache you don’t want—court, fines, maybe even losing your license. If you end up in that boat, talking to a lawyer is your best bet.

Breathalyzers

There you go—all about breathalyzers, like we're just talking over a cup of coffee. Just remember, the best way to deal with them is to not have to. Keep it safe out there!
