Thor Industries Unveils First Hybrid Class A RV: Revolutionizing Road Trips With 500-Mile Range

One of the biggest challenges with long road trips in an RV is how frequently you need to stop for fuel—and how quickly those stops can drain your wallet. Even with their large fuel tanks, traditional RVs often struggle to achieve more than 10 miles per gallon. Thor Industries, however, is looking to revolutionize the road trip experience with their new plug-in hybrid RV.

Meet the Thor Test Vehicle, a prototype that Thor is calling the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome. But don’t expect a typical hybrid system here—Thor has gone in a different direction.

Thor Industries

Built on a "series hybrid" platform from Harbinger Motors, it features a 140-kilowatt-hour battery pack, a gasoline-powered range extender (which doesn’t power the wheels directly), and a solar roof for added efficiency. On battery power alone, the RV can cover 150 miles, but with the range extender in play, you’re looking at an impressive 500 miles per fill-up.

Thor Industries

Thanks to its cutting-edge 800-volt architecture, the hybrid RV supports DC rapid charging, though Thor hasn’t yet disclosed the exact charging times. In addition, the RV has V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality, which means it can act as a backup power source for your home when needed.

Thor Industries

While Thor hasn’t revealed the specifics of the gas range extender, they’re boasting about the hybrid system’s power, claiming it delivers "twice the torque of a diesel engine." Underneath, the RV features a double-wishbone front suspension and a steer-by-wire system, and it comes equipped with a host of active safety features as standard.

Thor Industries

Although it’s currently a concept, Thor—best known as the parent company of Airstream—hopes to have this efficient, eco-friendly RV on the road and in production as early as next year, offering a game-changing option for those who love long road trips but want to save on fuel costs.
