The U.S. Government Ordered 10 Custom 2021 Chevrolet Suburbans, For $3.6 Million Each

As part of a $36.4 million development contract, GM will produce 10 custom 2021 Chevrolet Suburbans during the next two years. The Diplomatic Security Service will purchase the SUVs (DSS). If the $3.64 million price tag on Suburban alarms you, keep in mind that GM Defense says the SUVs need a new and unique body-on-frame chassis that is expressly developed to fulfill greater government vehicle demands, including better cargo capacity and greater ground vehicle load.

The body, engine system, brakes, and other components of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban will all be made from off-the-shelf components. Fixtureless installation and flexible fabrication are only two of the new production techniques that General Motors Defense plans to take advantage of.

As a result, 2021 Chevrolet Suburbans are cheaper than they otherwise would be, according to the manufacturer. Steve duMont, president of GM Defense, said: "We're pleased to be building a fully integrated, purpose-built HD Suburban in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State. Since 1935, the Chevrolet Suburban has been a household name in commercial motoring. Our development contract award reflects our long history of exceeding transportation capabilities, and our new HD Suburban will provide DSS with government-specific advanced mobility solutions tailored to their demands."

As the first step in GM Defense's partnership with the DSS, the first ten 2021 Chevrolet Suburbans are being produced. Upon completion, the unit expects to be awarded a new contract in May 2023, under which it will produce around 200 HD Suburbans every year for nine years. The Biden administration has stated that it is committed to electrifying the government fleet, even though GM Defense has not specified how it would power the machines. It will be fascinating to see if these vehicles are included, although GM Defense has created both electric and hydrogen-powered ones.
