The Updated Subaru BRZ Cup Car Basic Arrives Track-Ready

An updated, more track-oriented Subaru BRZ with increased safety features is once again available for purchase in Japan. The BRZ Cup Car Basic, with its stripped-down look and STi-exclusive tune, was created for a limited-edition Japanese series consisting of two manufacturers, Toyota and Subaru.

The most notable change is that the Eyesight ADAS suite is now included as standard equipment on all BRZ vehicles, including those with the manual gearbox option. A reworked roll cage with a new form and side bars that connect to a driver's 6-point seatbelt is another improvement.

While there are speakers, the cabin lacks amenities like an infotainment screen. Subaru claims that the sun visors and side air vents cannot be used due to the roll cage installation and that certain floor mats are necessary. For track usage, the side and curtain airbags have been removed. Consistent with its forerunner, the BRZ Cup Car Basic has blacked-out 16-inch steelies.

The stripped-down sportscar is still available in seven colors: six are free, including WR blue pearl, Sapphire blue pearl, Ice silver metallic, Magnetite gray metallic, and Crystal black silica; two more colors, Ignition Red and Crystal White Pearl, are available for an additional fee. Like other BRZ vehicles built to Japanese specifications, this one has a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer engine that generates 232 horsepower and 184.4 pound-feet of torque.

But to meet the more rigorous demands of track usage, Subaru installed an oil cooler and upgraded the engine seals. Only a six-speed manual transmission is capable of power transfer to the rear axle. The Cup Car Basic's basic limited-slip differential also has additional cooling fins. Subaru BRZ Cup Car Basic models are now on sale in Japan, with prices beginning at ¥3,700,400 ($24,367).
