The Renault Espace IV had a lifespan of 13 years and was succeeded by a new model in 2015 that has a more crossover-like design. The latest version, which is now in its sixth generation, is different from its predecessor, as it no longer resembles a traditional minivan.

Instead, it is a longer version of the Austral compact crossover with some design modifications. Interestingly, the new Espace is smaller and lighter than the previous minivan, with a lower ride height and more spacious third-row seating. It is also available with five seats, if desired.

The cargo area of the Renault Espace is easily accessible with a power tailgate. The size of the cargo space varies based on the seating configuration, ranging from 5.6 cubic feet when all seven seats are in place to an expansive 64.2 cubic feet when the second row is folded down in the five-seat model.

The Renault Espace does not offer a diesel engine option. However, it does come equipped with a turbocharged 1.3-liter gasoline engine, which can be paired with two electric motors to form a full hybrid system. The three-cylinder engine delivers 131 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, while the primary electric motor generates 68 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The second electric motor functions as a starter generator, producing 25 horsepower and 37 lb-ft of torque. The combined power output of the hybrid powertrain is 199 horsepower.

Renault has implemented a hybrid powertrain in their new minivan, resulting in a significant reduction in fuel consumption of up to 40%, with corresponding CO2 emissions of 105 g/km. The focus has been on efficiency rather than performance, as the vehicle's 0 to 62 mph acceleration takes 8.8 seconds, and its maximum speed is 109 mph. Starting this spring, Renault will start accepting orders for the new Espace.
